Plug In!

Overview

First we were to choose a music genre of our choice, and then we were given a second one at random. Then tasked with creating a fictitious music festival combining the two genres. Conceptualized the branding, vibe, products, and mission of the festival.

Goal

Conceptualize a music festival that combines themes and aesthetics of Indie Rock and K-Pop.

Logo

  • SHOW INITIAL CONCEPTS/SKETCHES

  • Mindmapped a lot of ideas, themes that are similar and different between indie rock and k-pop

    • Looking at fashion, common iconography, instruments used, themes in music, vibe of music, etc.

    • Initial sketches of just purely ideas > then moved into connecting visuals to create possible logos

  • Idea of a literal outlet (music being an outlet for music for feelings, thoughts, etc)

  • Electricity > electric guitars in indie rock, electronic feel of k-pop and electric/poppy vibe

  • Plugging in > electric guitars plugging into ports, just a fun visual/motto/festival name with a lot of vibrancy

  • Decided to make my own font for the english version of “Plug In!”

    • Wanted it to be kinda papery, DIY, almost look like a comic book impact font and shoutout

  • Korean version of plug in i kept very simple, straight and clean to emulate a lot of the visuals I was seeing in k-pop album cover art. Also to keep it condensed and thin for the sake of looking like outlet plugs

  • >> Explain colors??

Mission Statement

  • Everything about the logo felt kind of on the nose, so I wanted to lean into that. There are also a lot of great puns that have to do with electricity, so why not have fun with it.

  • “What your event is, why it exists, and its overall purpose.”

Brand and Asset Guidelines

Asset Guidelines

  • Logo (size, dimensions)

  • Font

  • Color Palette, Broken Down

  • Patterns

  • Imagery

  • Social Presence

  • Maybe insert a little gallery slideshow, project 3

Print and Digital Ads Campaign

  • SHOW INITIAL CONCEPT SKETCHES

Compiled a bunch of indie rock and kpop album covers into mood boards to get general vibes

Kpop: clean, bright, vibrant, energetic

Indie rock: muted, mellow, scrappy, DIY

  • Had this idea to showcase a bunch of items that look kind of like a wire with a plug at the end.

    • They don’t necessarily fit the “exact” specifications to fit in an outlet, but the festival is welcome and open to all!

    • Went around my house taking pictures of different things

    • Took them with my digital camera to get a “grainier” more DIY feel (indie)

Took a simple pic of an outlet with a plug in it front on, to reference

Gave each “wire” a fun color and a bit of grain in photoshop. I also wanted them to look cut out of paper (DIY feel), so I added a little outline and drop shadow in the final posters. Wanted the colors of the wires to also contrast well with the yellow/green/orange of the original design, and also be vibrant

  • Played around with LOTS of composition and colors, trying to find the perfect one (also after getting a lot of opinions

Considering all these details (mismatched wires and plugs, discovering new genres and music at an eclectic music event), “Find your outlet.” felt like a very fitting motto/tagline

Festival Kit

Tasked with creating co-branded items for the festival.

<> insert project 5 file here

Pop Rocks:

  • Seemed obvious given the “electric, poppy” branding of the festival

  • The design of pop rocks packages is almost exactly like the branding I’ve done for Plug In!, integrating the two was too easy

  • Changed the flavor to melon, it’s a popular flavor of candy in Korea and matches the green in my logo

Milkis

  • Yogurt carbonated drink that is popular in Korea

  • Branding is also relatively similar and easy to work with (stars, grainy, similar fonts, etc)

  • Mango flavor has a similar color way

DIY Converse

  • Inspired by a lot of the converse that are worn in indie rock fashion

  • Lots of them are DIY-ed with beads, paint, etc

  • Made a set of Plug In! themed beads and decorative items to use on the converse, and each attendee can decide how they want to make their own shoes look

Tote bag

  • Simple and cute tote bag using the wire motif again
